Thursday, September 21 – Sunday, September 24
Treat yourself to a weekend getaway surrounded by crafty friends both new and old! We will enjoy classes, a kit with an exclusive colorway of yarn to start a souvenir of the trip, a curated boutique, movie night, game night, prize giveaways, and of course lots of time to relax while knitting or crocheting. The setting is the idyllic Marconi Conference Center in Tomales Bay, with beautiful views, lovely grounds for gentle hikes, and wonderful meals. The retreat will be hosted by Kira Dulaney of Kira K Designs with special guest teachers Brooke Sinnes of Sincere Sheep and Jessie Wayburn of All Bodies Massage.
We will arrive on Thursday after 3pm and enjoy snacks and wine to get into the festive spirit before dinner at 6pm and a relaxing evening knitting together and naturally dyeing silk scarves as a special memento. Our group’s home base will be the Pine Lodge, with a large common room, smaller classroom, porch for enjoying the beautiful location, and boutique filled with yarn, kits, and other treats. Friday and Saturday, we’ll have classes geared to different interests and skill levels, and plenty of downtime to take walks or knit with friends, with a movie night and a game night. We will depart on Sunday after lunch, with an optional rendezvous at Knitterly in Petaluma on highway 101, where we’ll shop the beautifully curated collection of fine yarns, including local farm-to-skein wool, with a 15% discount for our group.
“Fun, relaxing, lots of good food, beautiful location, wonderful like-minded knitters, and lots and lots of knitting. What’s not to love?? I would totally do this again.” – Spring 2016 attendee
“Fantastic!!! The venue is great – beautiful site, comfortable accommodations, very good food. All in all a perfect place for a knitting retreat. But, the most fantastic part was the retreat itself. So well organized, great presentations, terrific workshops, lovely shop, fun movie nights.” – Spring 2016 attendee
“Stimulating & inspiring while at the same time relaxing. Incredibly well & thoughtfully organized. Beautiful venue with great food. I love everything about the retreat: the venue, the presentations & classes, the people, the pop-up shop, movie nights, sitting around knitting & chatting in a most relaxed environment. I wouldn’t want to miss it!!!” – Spring 2017 attendee
“Such an amazing setting with the beauty of trees and Tomales Bay. Classes and lectures very good and informative. Even more beauty found in the laughter, fun, and relationships built in such a short time. It is the kind of memory you love to look back on over and over in your lifetime. ” – Spring 2017 attendee
THE KNITTY GRITTY DETAILS
Registration includes lodging, classes, and all meals starting with Thursday’s dinner and ending with Sunday’s lunch. There is a vegetarian option at every meal, and most other dietary restrictions can be accommodated with advance notice by August 15th. Beer and wine can be purchased individually at dinner, and wine to share in the evenings will be provided. Outside food or beverages are not allowed by the venue.
Full-weekend registration includes a special kit for a two-color Brioche hat, which includes a pattern designed by Kira and custom-dyed yarn from Sincere Sheep. Don’t worry if you haven’t knit brioche stitch before, as we’ll have a class on Friday to get you started. A list of needles and notions for the kit and classes will be sent in advance. We’ll also have some fun giveaway prizes throughout the weekend.
There will be presentations and classes, but also plenty of down time built into the schedule, since this retreat is focused on relaxation. On Thursday evening we will explore Embroidery with Brooke. Friday’s classes will be Self Massage for Knitters & Crocheters with Jessie, and Brioche Knitting with Kira and Brooke, with an evening activity of eco-printing a silk scarf with Brooke. Saturday’s classes will be Kira’s Favorite Tips & Tricks, and Successful Yarn Substitution with Kira.
Massage by Jessie Wayburn of All Bodies Massage will be available at a rate of $15 for 15 minutes or $30 for 30 minutes, payable directly to Jessie. After registration, you’ll be sent a survey that will allow you to sign up for a massage time slot if you’d like one.
Lodging options are available for double-occupancy or triple-occupancy rooms with three twin beds. If you are coming with friends, please provide their names in the form below so you will be placed in the same room. If you are coming alone, you will be matched with roommates after answering a couple questions about preferences. Knitters are pretty much all wonderful people, but I’ll try to place early risers (or late sleepers) together. If you need to have your own room, please email me infoATkirakdesignsDOTcom to discuss options.
The Marconi Conference Center is built on a hill, which gives us lots of amazing views. There’s a short walk uphill from the guest rooms to the Pine Lodge, and a steep walk uphill to the dining area, with one disabled parking spot at the Pine Lodge and more parking at the dining hall. Please check in advance if you need a wheelchair accessible bedroom. The lodging area, our meeting building, and the dining hall have disabled parking spaces and ramps into the buildings. Cell phone service is spotty, but there is wifi and you will be able to receive phone calls on your room’s landline.
For those flying into the area, nearby airports are San Francisco, Oakland, and Sonoma County. Chartered van services like Marin Door-to-Door or Marin Airporter can get you to and from the conference center, or you could rent a car.
For those who can’t commit to the entire weekend, there’s a day trip option for a limited number of people to join us for Friday or Saturday only. Day trip guests can join us between 9:00 a.m. and 6 p.m., with the morning class, lunch, and afternoon class included. They can choose to extend the day and add breakfast and/or dinner. Daytrippers can sign up for chair massage (see details above). They will not receive the exclusive kit, but may choose to purchase one separately.
If you cancel with more than one month’s notice, an 80% refund will be sent. An 80% refund will be sent for cancellations with less than one month’s notice only if we can find someone else to take the spot. In the very unlikely event that we have to cancel the retreat due to low enrollment, we will give at least one month’s notice, and a full refund will be sent to all registered attendees.
