This basic beanie is a great first hat project and is crocheted in the round from the top down.  As pictured, this is not a very long hat, but for the adult size you will have plenty of yarn to make it longer if you want to.  The pictured yarn has been discontinued, but to get a similar effect you can use a variegated yarn or work random stripes of two or more colors or textures.
